Types Of PVC Pipes To Be Familiar With

Using PVC pipes Malaysia seems like an economical option for you at the moment, and you are about to choose that for your new house. But suddenly, you applied the brakes when you noticed that there isn’t just one PVC pipe, but there may be a few types in existence.

Your hunches are right, as there are. At the very least, there are four major types: unplasticized PVC, chlorinated PVC, molecularly oriented PVC and high impact PVC.

Unplasticized PVC (PVC-U)

An unplasticized PVC pipe, or PVC-U, does not have a plasticizer at all. This is the substance that renders the pipe flexible and decreases friction and viscosity. Because of this absence, you will also hear it as a rigid PVC.

PVC-U is a very common type of PVC pipe that is mainly used to transport drinking water, soil and waste and sewage. It also found its use in industrial and underground applications, as well as drainage. It is widely used due to their light weight, affordability and being easy to handle. It is also highly resistant to chemicals as well as UV exposures.

Additionally, PVC-U’s recyclable nature, durability and high mechanical performance makes itself a popular choice in transporting drinking water.

Chlorinated PVC (C-PVC)

Like its namesake, high chlorine content is prevalent on a chlorinated PVC, also known as a C-PVC. Other materials including lubricants, pigments, impact modifiers and stabilizers are added to enhance the final product.

The C-PVC pipe is used to transport drinking water, industrial liquids, as pipes and fittings, and carry water in various temperatures. Like a PVC-U, it is also resistant to corrosion. Its high durability makes itself suitable to be used in different applications too.

Due to their resistance to different temperature ranges, the PVC-U is also an ideal sewer application for commercial constructions and residential areas. Also, since it uses a plasticizer, it is more flexible than a PVC-U, though it is also just as environmentally friendly.

Molecularly Oriented PVC (PVC-O)

What makes a molecularly oriented PVC, or PVC-O, stand out among the others is its production, where a structure of amorphous PVC-U is converted into a much more layered form, essentially enhancing itself into this material. PVC-O is much needed when withstanding high pressure is a requirement for certain pipes and fittings.

PVC-O also found its use in irrigation systems, sewage in unstable grounds, and sewer pumping mains. Strong, stiff, and flexible, the PVC-O boasts a higher corrosion resistance than PVC-U as well as impact and weariness. Like the other two PVC types, they can be recycled.

High Impact PVC (PVC-Hi)

You have reached what is possibly the high end of PVC types. Congratulations. Remember PVC-U still? Look at it now. All grown up. And stronger than ever.

There are a few types of PVC pipes that are modified with thermoplastic alloys, and a high impact PVC, or PVC-Hi, is one of them. Thanks to the alloy, high resistance to heat, impact and pressure are its strengths, and it is a hero when used in conditions where high pressure or extreme temperatures are imminent.

PVC-Hi is commonly used to carry industrial liquids and as commercial sewer systems.
